You can’t go wrong with this hike and it’s such a fun one to explore and make your own. It is short, has breathtaking views, many of spots to go off trail, climb around or just chill at the beach. With so many welcome distractions, it’s definitely not a hike you want to take too seriously. It’s easy, and would probably be considered a walk if there weren’t so many tempting volcanic rocks to climb on. You will see and explore some of Maui’s best beaches including Kapalua Bay Beach, Oneloa Bay Dunes and D.T.Fleming Beach Park.
You will want to wear sneakers, hiking boots or strap on sandals for this one. The volcanic rock is fun to climb on but it is so easy to trip and fall on the very uneven surface, especially when you are distracted by the views and inevitable picture taking. You also don’t want to forget the sunscreen this time. There is little shade, and the delightful coastal breeze makes it easy to forget you are in the blaring sun.
While preparing for sun is important, sudden and often unexpected rain is common in Kapalua. Views are best with clear or partly cloudy skies, so it’s ideal to plan accordingly as much as possible. We have witnessed very dramatic weather changes within just an hour, so unless major rainfall is expected, it often makes sense to just wait it out a bit. The ocean is so much more vibrant when the skies are blue, so even though rain might be pleasant to hike in, the view is often worth the wait.
Your total out and back distance, If you manage to stay on the trail, will clock in at just under 2.5 miles. A little exploring will add up too. If you are looking for something a little more intense and cardio-heavy, consider pairing this with the Mahana Ridge Trail. It’s much less picturesque but is close by and will definitely get your heart pumping.
There are plenty of places and beaches to enjoy a picnic lunch. Plan ahead and enjoy a post-hike early dinner at Merriman’s or stop at the Honolua store for something a bit more simple and spontaneous.
