Moss Landing is a great place to visit for a mellow walk while taking in some coastal scenery. Its easy to access if you live in or are are staying in the Bay Area, Santa Cruz or Monterey. We love to visit for some kayaking, but walking is a great alternative. There are plenty of lengthy trails if getting in some scenic miles is your thing, and others more appropriate for lazier wildlife viewing.
Our recent adventure included a slow walk to check out birds and seals, a debate on whether we should kayak or not and a relaxing break at the beach. We parked at Moss Landing State Beach and enjoyed the morning moseying around. The area, including Elkhorn Slough Marine Reserve offers the potential to view up to 350 species of birds including pelicans, herons and egrets. You may also glimpse otters, seals and sea lions.
Our walk was followed by a delicious lunch at Haute Enchilada. The food and service were superb. We loved their take on traditional Mexican dishes, and particularly enjoyed the guac with pomegranate seeds. There is an art gallery as well, and plenty of outdoor space to explore.
There are also many fun side adventures near Moss Landing too. After our walk or kayak, its fun to stop at a produce market for a snack, specialty foods and produce for the week. If you time it right, you can enjoy the fresh artichokes the area is known for.
