This is truly a hike of a lifetime and one that definitely requires some planning ahead. The trail head is only accessible by helicopter (charter with TEMSCO Helicopters) or train (with White Pass). Both are centrally located in downtown Skagway. For this out and back hike to Laughton Glacier, you will want to make sure that you have ample time to make it to the glacier, explore the glacier itself and hike back before your scheduled pickup time. Even if you don’t make it all the way to the glacier (we didn’t, due to little people prioritizing snack breaks over making it to the destination) the hike itself, which gives you a clear and gorgeous view of the glacier is still a worthy adventure. Although, if this happens to be your first glacier visit of any kind, I would recommend making it a priority to make it all the way. Glaciers are pretty magical!
We utilized both modes of transportation with a combined tour and guided hike through Packer Expeditions. We arrived after a scenic helicopter flightseeing tour and at the end were picked up by the train for a relaxing and picturesque ride back to Skagway. As experienced hikers, we were initially hesitant to use a guide. It seemed excessive and unnecessary for an easy/moderate hike, but in the end we were so glad we did it. Our guide was helpful, knowledgable and patient. She knew which stream water was safe to drink, where to stop to get the best pictures, and a ton about the forest and glacier. She also had snacks for us…hence all the snack breaks.
The trail begins as a packed dirt path through the old growth rainforest with a fairly low grade incline. There are abundant trees and flowers surrounding the trail and opportunities to take a peek at the Skagway River nearby.
The trail slowly gets steeper and rockier as you approach the glacier. With many large boulders, you will need to watch your step, which can get a little tricky as trail gets a little steeper in some parts. The river that we were so excited to peak at, now flows along side of the trail.
Wildlife sightings are common on this hike and it is not unusual to see birds, brown bear, moose and goats. While we did not enjoy any sightings, the gorgeous weather more than made up for it.
The transportation to and from this hike is such an amazing bonus. The relaxing train ride back to Skagway (with more snacks) was just what we needed after a fun day out enjoying nature.
