Nugget Falls is a 377-foot waterfall that pours dramatically from the hanging Nugget Glacier into Mendenhall Lake. It is easily accessible from Juneau airport by car or bike.
The hike to Nugget Falls is short, sweet, fast, and easy. It is highly rewarding and high on the instant gratification spectrum. It is ideal for all ages and great if you are short on time or have kids with little patience, but want to get some energy out. The distance to the falls is just under a mile and provides ample opportunities to safely and easily veer off the trail to catch views of Mendenhall Lake, Nuggets Falls, or Mendenhall Glacier.
Begin your hike near the Visitor’s Center, following the well-marked signage. Bear encounters have occurred on the trail, so be sure to review proper bear protocol, which can be found posted near the trailhead. The trail is quite smooth and would be easy to maneuver a stroller on. Check with the Visitor’s Center for specifics on accessibility.
We started early in the morning to avoid crowds and to complete the hike and arrive on time for a tour later in the morning. Having visited in the evening as well, we did not find lighting to significantly impact either the experience or our photographs.
Use caution and common sense when approaching the falls and be sure to roam the beach area and catch a slightly different and closer view of the glacier. When you’ve had your fill of the falls, simply trace your steps back to the parking lot.
