The hike to Lower Dewey Lake is ridiculously convenient for anyone visiting Skagway, whether you travel in by cruise ship, car, boat, or plane. The trailhead begins at the Southeast end of town between 2nd and 3rd Streets, across the train tracks and river. While we just hiked the 3 miles round out and back to Lower Dewey, the trail does extend beyond to Upper Dewey Lake and Devil’s Punch Bowl. Trail maps and information are located here.
Hikers on this trail are rewarded with lovely views of Southern Skagway, and if you travel in by ship, a view of your ship from above. The trail is steep in some areas and I would consider it an easy-moderate. There are lovely seasonal wildflowers along the way and ample shade making it pleasant on a warm day.
The lake itself is scenic and calm. There are several areas around where you can sit on a log or rock to picnic or wade in the water. When you have had your fill of lake time follow the trail back to Downtown Skagway and enjoy an ice cream, cocktail, or lunch.
